>> a suspect on the run from the chp to get stuck in a tight spot. >> we're told a major freeway has just been reopened after a police investigation of homicide >> the bay bridge commute is so far a good one but we have a new accident coming in in fremont. >> good morning everyone. >> need details on that south a rescue at and orchard supply store >> authorities identified the victim as a suspect in a high- speed police chase this morning that started on highway 101 in san jose and ended on the east capitol expressway. then the suspect climbed up on a orchard supply store roof and fell down between 2 18 in.

walls. he called 911 after his pregnant wife refused to help him out. a freeway off ramp in oakland has been reopened but a murder investigation continues >> i'm standing on the corner of market and macarthur boulevard where police are working homicide. police received reports of a shooting in the 900 block of west macarthur boulevard. a male adult victim was pronounced dead at the scene. the suspects fled in a vehicle before police arrived. one person killed, no suspects, and the macarthur and 580 off ramp are now reopened. >> a stretch of highway 17 in the santa cruz mountains just reopened 20 minutes ago. a tanker accident and fire

close the highway in both directions near summit road at about 10:00 last night. fire erupted in the engine and cab of the truck and sparked a 5 a. grass fire. highway 17 is now open >> it has been a busy day for traffic >> we have been following a couple of different grass fires on the right-hand shoulder. a shooting investigation and an accident on highway 17. i just want to show you the traffic sensors in that area, all lanes are open in both directions and everything is green so there is no delay between the santa cruz mountains and a lot status. we're getting learned, getting word of possible flares on the roadway from was down 80-east bound 580 near macarthur boulevard. even though the off ramp now remains open, apparently the left lane on the connector ramp

from westbound 80-east bound 580 is closed so there are still some slight delays in that area coming through the macarthur maze. >> a fire in the mission district leaving 26 people without a home overnight. it started around 1:00 this morning near 22nd and fair oaks. a battalion chief tells us his crew was able to get a hold of the situation quickly. you can see flames shooting out of the roof in this picture. because of the fire is still under investigation. >> a chp officer shop along the east bay freeway has died. there is a tribute for officer kenya youngstrom and you can see the moral right behind you >> it has been growing even overnight. we saw a gentleman stop by one hour ago and leave a note at the

door in front of chp headquarters in martinez. that is after officer youngstrom was officially pronounced dead just after 6:00 last evening >> it is my sad duty to share with you that the officer has been taken off life-support. >> that is the chaplain delivering the news to those gathered to honor chp officer ken youngstrom. . he had been on live support for about a day and a half, long enough for his organs to be given to eight different people. he leaves behind a wife and four kids >> it's sad because i have known him for so long, it is just so sad because i can't picture losing my dad. >> the investigation into what happened tuesday continues.

we know that youngstrom and his partner in a separate car or responding to a dead deer when the driver of a jeep shot youngstrom in the head after he approached the jeep. the other officer then shot and killed lacy. the chp is organizing a large scale memorial that will likely draw people from all over the state. thousands of people are expected and we will keep you posted on the details as the memorial is planned. >> the man who killed officer youngstrom is identified as christopher lacy. he graduated from san francisco state university. police have removed boxes of evidence from his home in came a county. we're learning more about lacy and hopefully it will lead investigators to why this

happened >> lacey was a software engineer who worked in the bay area. we do have more photos of the man. family members say he was very bright and friends say he strive to do something great. his home was raided by officers tuesday night to kick in his back door and broke the windows. police seized computers servers and hard drives >> he was a pretty decent guy, i thought >> we have been told that he pretty much keeps to himself, a loner >> back in contra costa county detectives revealed what was inside the jeep. a loaded semi-automatic handgun, to loaded magazines, and a knife. he had one prior arrest for drunk driving but no other criminal record. we have reports that lacy's family says he was bipolar. one friend says he thought lacey was on medication for the disorder but was not sure.

>> the demolition of the building in france sent a cloud of thick dust towards the spectators. this happened yesterday on the outskirts of paris. the building came down in a matter of seconds but then the winds and a dust cloud towards the crowd that gathered to watch. >> let's get a look at the roadways with elizabeth. you have been busy. >> things are finally starting to quiet down even though we're getting some new fender benders. this one is in fremont southbound 880 approaching thornton ave. it sounds like there are a couple of accidents in the area but only one of them is blocking a lane. elsewhere, much better news through the macarthur maze. they have picked up the

flares, they were conducting a shooting investigation after a fatal shooting. everything is now moving fine. slow and go conditions in the altamont pass and the dublin interchange. a quick look at the bay bridge toll plaza where they just turned the metering lights on a few minutes ago and we are now left with delays. carpool lanes are getting by just fine. the weather has been whacky lately so here is our wacky weatherman >> we're finally getting some wild weather around the bay area. a chance of scattered showers in towards the santa cruz mountains. some of the cells are popping up and a pretty good one right there. thunderstorms could possibly be popping up as well.

mostly cloudy skies, low clouds have extended on shore. not a bad day, clouds will part just a bit. tropical moisture still working its way across the bay area. temperatures are not at bad, down a bit in the '80s inland. south of san francisco on highway one just before half moon bay, it is princeton. right below the giant golf ball you will find princeton by the sea, a town once known for bootleggers. today it is where fisherman toil, surfers test their mettle and visitors come to play >> it is a great life, great people, it interesting stories, never a dull moment, so i really love it >> he says saturday as the day to venture here >> is full of people who come to buy fish and there are 34 or five party fishing boats. they usually come back pretty full. >> princeton by the sea is where surfers gather for maverick spa, a contest with the biggest

fish and chips, a favorite. not a drop of beer was dropped during the filming of that segment. princeton by the sea is an an incorporated town with no post office or police station and literally, if you blink he will miss it. right before you get to half moon bay is where it is. great hiking and bird watching and you'll find people fishing. a couple of great bed-and- breakfast if you want to stay over there. >> i understand the brewing co. has on the obama beer and a romney beer >> obama is out selling romney by 5-1 right now but apparently won taste good. more of my segments at

tennis has come to an end. he resumed a rain delayed match yesterday. after taking the first set he lost the next three and he retired immediately afterwards, bidding goodbye to his fans. for many years he had close ties with the shp open in downtown san jose. >> giants and athletics get a day of rest today and they both could use it. both of them came up losers yesterday. a perfect game for arizona into the sixth inning. a little pushing and shoving match kind of thing in the eighth inning but arizona goes on to win 6-2. a's pitcher brand and mccarthy spent the night in the hospital for observation after taking a ball right off his head. he went down but was able to walk off the field.

the angels win 7-1. mccarthy should be ok. the play of the day from detroit. the cleveland indians third baseman tumbles into the stands to make an unbelievable catch but he lands on a woman with a neck brace. the woman was ok. the indians ended up losing but that was still a nice catch. coming up, arrested again. but the latest legal troubles for a former bay area lawmaker nadia lockyer >> president obama prepares to except his party's nomination >> immemorial has been growing all night long for a fall in a,, ,,

local media reports that one man has been removed in the air, from the airplane in handcuffs. we will bring you the latest >> this morning, state flags will fly at half staff in memory of a slain a chp officer. officer can use youngstrom is being remembered today in mai martinez >> there is a memorial behind me that has been growing all night long as people get word of the death of officer youngstrom. he was pronounced dead just after 6:00 last evening. >> is my sad duty to share with you that the officer has been taken off life-support. >> that was the chaplain delivering the news to those gathered to honor the officer at a vigil that then turned into a memorial in fairfield near the neighborhood where he lived. he had been on life support long enough for his organs to be given to eight different people.

he was 37 years old and leaves behind a wife and four kids >> very touching. it is a great feeling that despite something bad, you actually have the community come together. excuse me. >> investigation continues and we do know that youngstrom and his part or responding to a dead deer on 680 when the jeep pulled over for unobstructed license plate. the driver of that jeep christopher lacey shot officer youngstrom in the head. the other officers then shot and killed lacy. officers remember him as a go get them type of guy who volunteered at company barbecue and was always willing to lend a helping hand. they're planning a memorial for him and we will keep you posted.

place >> this was certainly an unusual set of circumstances that led to the hit and run suspect getting stuck in between two buildings. that is the crack that he ended up getting stuck in. this all started with the chp chased on highway 101. chp broke off the chase once it entered surface streets. five minutes later the driver gets in an accident with another car and tries to get away on foot for whatever reason he decides to scale the orchard supply building and tries to jump from this building to the lower building when he fell into that crack. he felt about 20 ft. down and got stuck. at that point he does call his pregnant wife for help but she can't do anything. they contact 911 and they can't help so finally the fire department, i should say the police department contacts the

fire department and a spokesperson tells us how they perform a technical rescue >> the reason he could not get out is because of the tight space. the rescue team used a special ropes and instructed the man to put devices around his wrist and they were able to hoist him up >> fortunately he was not in terrible condition. he tore some of his clothing and had minor injuries. he will be charged with felony hit and run and apparently he had an outstanding warrant which is why he was fleeing. >> new this morning, a murder investigation in oakland prompted the closure of a freeway off ramp for more than one hour. the exit ramp onto san pablo ave reopened about 45 minutes ago. police are continuing to investigate a shooting on the 900 block of west macarthur.

a man was pronounced dead at the scene and police believe the shooter drove away before they arrive. a stretch of highway 17 near summit road is completely open again after a tanker fire sparked. the fire erupted in the engine and the cab truck and started a half acre grass fire. >> another check of the weather. actually we will go to traffic first. >> we have been following a number of different incidents across the bay area. now we have what sounds like two different crashes and at least one is blocking leans in fremont southbound 880 approaching thornton ave. you can see brake lights on the traffic sensors, almost back to highway 92. just a heads up if you are

commuting into fremont towards the dumbarton bridge. the bay bridge unfortunately is your usual commute through here because the metering lights are turned on. we have photographers this morning all over the bay area including one on 280 and so far things look pretty good on the extension heading toward san francisco and at&t park. mobile 5 looks like they might be getting on to 680 now. they were on highway 4. you will find delays in antioch and we will check in with them little bit later periods lightning strikes in san jose? >> yes, we just had a couple of them in that direction. we had plenty of them yesterday and now it is starting once again.

just a couple of cells are moving through but this one is making its way toward san jose with lightning strikes along 17 and 680. is bringing some downpour as you make your way through the san jose area. i think the rain shifts a little bit further to the south today but still unsettled and very interesting looking out there today. when our delays sfo on arriving flights. temperatures in the '50s with patchy fog out towards the coast. >> some new troubles for former alameda county supervisor naughty of lawyer who is facing drug and child endangerment charges. police found methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia in the room she shared with her nine year-old son. she resigned earlier this year

than plan but president obama is set to except his nomination at the dnc >> rough weather is forcing the outdoor event into a smaller indoor event. melissa griffin joins us live from charlotte n.c.. let's start with the president's speech last night. everyone is buzzing about that. how did the attendees react? >> the were beyond elation. people were crying, people made, said it made them proud to be a democrat again. inside the arena was the feeling watching him speak, you knew something special was happening and you were praying that he didn't screw it up. you can see people exhaling dramatically at the end of his speech because he made it all the way to the end. he did not go off terrell's that also there was a collective

brief, breath at the end that was palpable. he addressed the issue that democrats feel strongly about, republicans have said, president obama didn't do anything to help the country and at the same time thwarted all of his efforts. bill clinton went straight for the jugular of that and said that the party bickering we have seen with this administration has been exceptional and nothing that i certainly had to deal with when i was president. >> you really held their attention for 48 minutes. elizabeth warren is a democratic candidate for massachusetts and she did a pretty good job also. >> she certainly did. the usher standing next to me ask me what her name was so he could write her a check for her campaign. i imagine her coffers got a big

boost after last night's speech. i'm sure will be very helpful for her and what is a very tight race she is in. she was wonderful. >> some say that it was an afterthought last night >> the delegate vote tally was not supposed to be that interesting because everyone is voting for obama but if you listen in and stay around, some interesting things happen. the delegates from maine and oregon made snide remarks about how their votes will count different from the republican convention where ron paul's votes were not counted. cc goldwater, granddaughter of barry goldwater deliver the votes of arizona and said my grandfather would not recognize today's republican party with its intrusions in liberty and anti-choice stance. utah made it a point to say that the 2002 winter olympics in salt lake city were publicly

financed, another dig at mitt romney strict capitalism platform. >> it should be good theater tonight when the president is speaking >> to reports out could provide a preview to tomorrow's employment report for august >> here to talk about it is jason brooks >> some encouraging news on the job market when it comes to first-time weekly unemployment claims, they fell by 12,000. the four week average is hovering right around 371,000, still suggesting moderate growth. the august jobs report does come out tomorrow and a private payroll trackers said it saw a bigger than expected gain in august. as far as the economists, we will see a gain tomorrow with

the unemployment rate staying steady at 8.3%. europe is in focus this morning. the president of the european central bank finally unveiling his plan to buy bonds from struggling governments keeping up with a mountainous debt. that has given the market's a nice boost. right now of the dow is surging higher. nasdaq is picking up 31 points. another solid day for facebook, shares gained 3% after a 5% gain yesterday when it was disclosed that mark zuckerberg will not sell any of his shares for at least another year. >> >> i think it will be an

interesting day, we already have thunderstorms in the san jose area. some showers and thunderstorms have moved through. doppler radar is picking up some of that moisture right now. you can watch as it moves on through, a couple of lightning strikes over the past hour or so. don't be surprised if you get caught in brief downpour with the system sliding by but it moves out in a hurry. a lot of tropical moisture is sliding across the sky so there is a chance we could have a few more scattered showers or thunderstorms. more sunshine in the weekend in things settling down. temperatures in the afternoon, sunshine and clouds in the '80s in lynch. '50s and '60s out to the coast.

warmer temperatures to start off the weekend and then cooling down sunday into monday. >> let's go back to fremont where we are following a couple of accidents in the same area around thornton ave. everything has been cleared to the right-hand shoulder but there is still activity there. kind of jam up all the way back to a word. elsewhere, northbound 85 approaching blossom hill. there was an accident and a car fire so it might still be blocked off. silicon valley west bound to hundred 37, no delay at all. the altamont pass is pretty heavy this morning. no major incidents in that area but nearly half hour. the bay bridge, once they turn the lights on, is backed up really quickly.

20 minutes to get you pass the pay gates and on to the bay bridge. >> caltrans says it might need to close the bay bridge for five days next year. it is scheduled to open labor day weekend 2013 but for the changeover to happen from the old bridge to the new, they might need to shut down the entire bridge for five days, along this plant closure in the history of the bridge. history of the bridge. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
